Newcastle are ready to appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card – which currently has him missing the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies winger was sent off before extra-time against Brighton on Sunday in what was a forgettable FA Cup outing for Eddie Howe’s men. Another major trophy opportunity passed them by as the Seagulls secured a 2-1 win at St James’ Park.
Gordon was dismissed on 83 minutes after shoving Jean Paul van Hecke. Newcastle’s 10 men couldn’t hold out against the visitors, who were also down a man, with Danny Welbeck notching the winning goal in extra-time.
The red card handed out to Gordon will see him suspended for the next three matches, which includes the cup final at Wembley against Liverpool on March 16. Howe though claims the England winger had no malicious intent in his actions and says the Magpies will look to have the card overturned if they believe there are grounds to do so.
He said: “Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation. I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”
Losing Gordon would be a huge blow for Newcastle as they look to overcome favourites Liverpool. Their winger scored earlier this season against the Reds in a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park and his pace is one of the team’s most crucial weapons.
The club are also looking to end a trophy drought that dates back more than half a century. They were in the Carabao Cup final two years ago, losing to Manchester United, and impressively overcame Arsenal in the semi-final to book themselves another final berth.
Newcastle will also be fearing even more damage after Alexander Isak, who scored the opening goal, was forced off in the 86th minute, being replaced by Callum Wilson. Isak recently missed the 2-0 loss at Liverpool and not having him available would further dent their chances.
Howe was keen to calm any fears about a serious injury after the game. “Alex just felt a bit of general tightness,” he said. “I don’t think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt as though he had to come off.”
