Sheffield Wednesday star Josh Windass has suggested the one-year extension clause in his contract is ‘more or less’ up to him to make a decision over.
Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass has regularly been at the centre of speculation over his future. Interest from elsewhere has prompted questions over his SWFC transfer fate at times, but his contract has been a focus over the past year or so too.
The Owls agreed a new deal with Windass last summer. The upfront agreement saw him sign a deal until the end of the 2024/25 season but it has since emerged there is an extension option included.

That could see the 31-year-old stay on his current terms until 2026, but Windass how now suggested it might not be as straightforward as it seems.
Speaking to The Star, the Sheffield Wednesday man suggested the extension clause is one on his side, meaning it would be his decision over whether it is triggered or not.
However, talks between SWFC and his agent have been ongoing over a potential new contract since November.
“I think they’ve been negotiating with my agent since November to be honest.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen. The option in my contract I think is still more or less up to me whether I stay or not, these options and stuff aren’t maybe what people think so you’ve got to do what’s best for you and the club aren’t just going to keep somebody on who doesn’t want to be here.

“It is what it is, we’ve just got to get as many points as we possibly can to get in the play-offs and I’ll be doing my bit for sure to make sure that’s possible.”
Windass uncertainty persists
While it might have been felt as though the contract extension clause would remove uncertainty over Windass’ Sheffield Wednesday future for this summer at least, it looks as though it won’t be the case.
It could be that the decision is one that lays firmly in the players’ hands. The forward has expressed he is happy with the Owls and focused on the task ahead, but it may not be as cut and dried as was first believed.
Nevertheless, with talks ongoing over potentially extending his stay on a new deal, it will be hoped a positive conclusion is reached sooner rather than later.
The current focus for Sheffield Wednesday
As Windass’ situation rumbles on in the background, SWFC will be looking to find play-off form over the final 13 games of the campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday are 9th in the Championship table and only three points off the top six but with three wins, three draws and three defeats in their last nine games, they haven’t shown the consistency to convince fans of their true top six credentials.
Up next is a tough game against Burnley on Friday night. The Owls follow that trip up with a home tie against another promotion hopeful in Sunderland next week.
