Ellis Simms has reflected on a tough win that needed Coventry to ‘dig in’ after they clinched a victory over Sheffield Wednesday.;
After scoring both goals that brought home a vital three points in a tough away match against Sheffield Wednesday, goal machine Ellis Simms has thanked the fans for their support as the Sky Blues move within touching distance of the play-offs.
The six-pointer clash in Hillsborough on Saturday left both sets of fans with sky-high blood pressure. A draw looked increasingly likely as the clock marked 90 minutes, that was until Simms stepped up to the mark slotting home a 92nd minute winner.
The first 15 minutes looked as if the home side may take it, with some body on the line defending required before the tides changed as Jack Rudoni beautifully laid a cross up for Simms to put into the back of the next, giving City the lead.
Wednesday’s relentless pressure led to an unfortunate own goal with Oliver Dovin parrying the ball into Joel Latibeaudiere and back into their own net to tie the game for the next 30 minutes until Simms slotted home a winner in front of the jubilant travelling fans.
Speaking on having to dig in throughout the game, the match-winner said: “We had to dig in it was a tough game today, they’ve got quality so we had to defend well and defend the box. It wasn’t pretty, and we made a few changes to get that energy back up and I thought the subs did well.
“I think getting the three points is the main thing, we want to be looking upwards, so we need to get points on the board to do that. Fair enough it wasn’t the prettiest game but at the end of the day we’re coming home with three points.”
With just 13 games left of the season, the win pulled City into seventh pace and just one point away from West Brom and a chance for Premier League promotion.
With a second win on the bounce, Simms is hoping to put a run of good form together to secure a play-off place. In an interview, the forward revealed: “It’s a great run of form, we’ve won two before losing two, which were difficult games against Leeds and Ipswich but we need to keep our feet on the ground. We know this league is so tight around the play-off positions, the margins between like eighth and 15th place for example are all tight.”
He also wanted to give a special thank you to the travelling fans who made the trip up to South Yorkshire, adding: “It’s a great feeling; the fans always have my back. As of late, I haven’t scored as many as I would’ve liked, so today was a nice moment to celebrate with the whole away end.”
