Ex-Tottenham forward Gary Lineker fully agreed with Gary Neville’s player of the match choice for Spurs vs Manchester United before earmarking the same player to become a potential England star
Gary Lineker agreed with Gary Neville naming Djed Spence as his player of the match during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.
In a lacklustre encounter between two struggling former Premier League giants, James Maddison’s 13th minute tap-in proved the difference for the home side, taking Spurs up to 12th in the table. But it was his Tottenham team-mate Spence, continuing his role as a makeshift left-back due to the club’s ongoing injury crisis, who outshone everyone on the pitch.
The 24-year-old’s performance drew praise from fans and pundits alike, including Sky Sports co-commentator Neville, who named Spence as the best player on the day. Neville said: “It isn’t an easy one to choose (player of the match) but I think Djed Spence has been as good as any for Spurs at left-back. Spence on that side has stuck to his task well.”
Despite being a right-back by trade, the former Nottingham Forest star has been sensational since coming into Ange Postecoglou’s side in the absence of Destiny Udogie, looking at home on the opposite flank. Despite previously being totally out of favour, he is now making a habit of such stellar displays, having also been named player of the match in the team’s 2-0 Premier League win at Brentford two weeks ago.
